Job Application Process

Applications must be filled out completely and must clearly show that the qualification requirements are met. A resume will not be accepted in lieu of the official application form. All information is subject to investigation and verification. Applications must be received in the Human Resources Department no later than the deadline time and date listed on the front of the announcement. Applications postmarked on the filing deadline and received after the deadline time and date will not be considered timely. Faxed applications are not accepted.
It is the sole responsibility of the applicant to immediately notify the Human Resources Department of any change in the applicant’s address and/or telephone contact numbers.

NOTE: City Hall hours of operation are as follows: Monday - Thursday 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. It is exclusively the applicant's responsibility to understand City Hall's hours of operation.

ADA ACCOMMODATION: Individuals with disabilities who require accommodation in the application or testing process must provide, at time of application, documentation from a qualified authority of the need for accommodation.

DIRECT DEPOSIT: Available for all employees.

DMV PRINTOUT: Some applicants will be required to provide a Motor Vehicle Report from DMV at time of interview. An explanation is required for any Vehicle Code violation.

DRUG AND ALCOHOL TESTING: Applicants who are considered for hire must submit to and pass drug and alcohol testing prior to hire. The City of Victorville is a drug-free workplace.

ELIGIBILTY LISTS: A list of qualified candidates will be established in descending order of examination scores. Referrals for interviews for vacant positions will be made with those achieving higher scores referred first over those with lower scores. The City reserves the right to make appointments to lower level positions when a current Eligibility List has not been established.

SELECTION PROCESS: The City reserves the right to rate applicants based on a review of the application materials and to invite only the most qualified applicants to participate in successive parts of the selection process, consisting of one or more of the following:

  1. A written examination of technical knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  2. An oral examination before a board of representatives from other agencies.
  3. A performance examination for demonstration of manual skills (i.e. typing, shorthand, and equipment operation).
  4. A supplemental questionnaire for measurement of education, experience, and training.
  5. An assessment center measuring various job skills.

FINGERPRINT CHECK: Applicants will be fingerprinted for the purpose of a confidential background investigation. Some applicants will be required to provide a Motor Vehicle Report from the DMV if their position requires the occasional use of a City vehicle.

IMMIGRATION LAW: Prior to employment, applicants will be required to provide necessary documentation to verify proof of legal residence entitling them to work in the United States, as required by the Immigration and Reform Act of 1986.

MEDICAL STANDARDS: Applicants will be required to pass a medical examination prior to appointment. Failure to meet medical standards may result in withdrawal of job offer.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD: All full-time employees must satisfactorily complete a one year probationary period. Probation may be extended up to six months. Part-time employees are at will.

PROTEST PROCEDURE: To challenge any phase of the recruitment process, you must send a letter to the Human Resources Department. This letter must be received no later than the fourth working day following the date of notification of the results of any action taken. Any protest must include rationale to support the protest. You will be responded to of any action taken.

REFERENCE CHECK: Appointment is contingent on verification of all references listed on the candidate's application.
